Renovations have been made since we went to a Grant School; including, but not limited to removal of all the old carpet, re-installation of the desks areas and putting lights over the desk aread for the older students; new closets were installed for the both the younger/older students. The older students have their own closet space where they are able to lock up their belongings. ENw couches, mattresses, sheets and towels were purchased and a new Library has been set up for the students in the back room. We have also a purchased picnic tables that are put in the patio for the students. Paintings were bought from a Navajo Artist and displayed in the central areas to encourage Cultural sensitivity. We also purchased a Big 60" inch Big Screen 1080i Television in the livingroom area.
We have dorm/parent meetings every month for updates and to talk about concerns. Meetings are usually on a Sunday; supper is served; door prizes are given and a stipend is paid. We have brought in speakers that have given information on Motivational speeches; Drugs/Alcohol; Suicide, Meth, Gangs awareness; through Art, etc... To name a few activities.
We offer End-Of-The-Year trips where 5th graders and up have been taken on an over-night-trip to Albuquerque. Students have visited the Pueblo Cultural Center, Natural History Museum, Zoo, Tramway and Uncle Cliff's Amusement Park.
GOALS FOR THE FUTURE: We want the dorm to be a place where kids WANT to be, NOT where they HAVE to be. We want to make their bedrooms more homely by purchasing new beds, new decorative linen, paintings murals or putting up decals and making theme rooms, such as; train room; football room for the boys and purple rooms; princess' suites, for the girls, etc... We want to set up a comfortable reading room with lots of rich reading materials such as Magazines for all Four Wings. We would like to make a toy room for the little boys and girls in their wings. We would like to make available for the students bikes, scooters, skateboards, etc... We want the students to have a sense of belonging, have a sense of ownership, and to be proud of their dormitory. We want students to feel that this is a home away from their home. Much Thanks for your support parents/guardians. Thanks, Minnie Ortiez. Contact me @ (505) 960-5265 or (505) 486-5265.
